Acupuncture for Kids | Gentle Chinese Medicine for Kids
Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to effectively treat a variety of ailments, including pediatric conditions. In the Chinese culture, children are treated from birth and are raised taking herbs and getting acupuncture treatments. The Japanese also developed a technique called Shonishin in the late 1700’s. This non-needle technique allows the body to naturally heal itself, helping to build the immune system and address conditions such as:
- Ear Infections
- Enuresis (bed wetting)
- Digestive Disorders
- Colds / Flu’s
- Developmental Disorders
Needle-free Acupuncture for kids
Shonishin (needle-free acupuncture) accesses acupuncture points by gently brushing and tapping along the meridians and specific points according to the underlying diagnosis. The theory is the same as in Chinese medicine but this technique is less invasive for children. Occasionally, for more severe conditions acupuncture may be used if the parent and the child are comfortable with it.
Children tend to be more ‘yang’ meaning their energy is more superficial and illness tends to come on rapidly. A perfect example of this is when a child gets a very high fever with an infection but the symptoms often alleviate as quickly as they come on. Children generally respond quickly to Shonishin and, surprisingly, kids tend to enjoy the treatment!
