IVF & IUI Acupuncture

When your fertility journey includes IVF

When fertility care moves into IVF, treatment often becomes more structured and time-sensitive. Many patients seek acupuncture during this phase to support their bodies through ovarian stimulation, embryo transfer, and early pregnancy.

At Well Woman Acupuncture, acupuncture for IVF is a focused area of our practice. Care is structured around the phases of IVF treatment and tailored to your specific protocol, medications, and goals, with timing adjusted carefully at each stage.

Why acupuncture is commonly used during IVF

Acupuncture is an important part of the IVF process and is increasingly integrated into fertility care worldwide. In a landmark study published in 1996, researchers identified a direct relationship between electroacupuncture and improved uterine blood flow—an important factor in IVF outcomes. Since that time, this approach has been widely adopted and refined in fertility clinics across the globe. Based on this research and subsequent studies, acupuncture is commonly used during IVF to support uterine blood flow, ovarian response, and overall physiological readiness throughout treatment. We work closely with fertility clinics, including Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine (CCRM), Conceptions, and CNY Fertility, and have supported thousands of patients through IVF using evidence-informed acupuncture protocols tailored to each stage of care.

What an acupuncture session is like

Each session takes place in a quiet, private treatment room, with one-on-one attention from your practitioner. Appointments are unhurried, allowing space for your body to settle and respond to treatment.

For patients undergoing IVF, sessions begin with a thorough review of your current IVF calendar, including medication protocols and timing. Care is coordinated with your fertility clinic and adjusted throughout each phase of treatment.

Acupuncture is tailored to support each stage of the IVF process. This may include support during ovarian stimulation, preparation for retrieval or transfer, and recovery between phases. When appropriate, techniques such as electro-stimulation (e-stim) may be incorporated to support circulation and ovarian response.

Acupuncture should not be painful. Most patients describe sensations as mild or subtle, and many rest deeply during sessions. It’s common for patients to share that treatment time becomes a steady, grounding point during the IVF process.

The environment is intentionally calm and undisturbed, offering a setting where you can rest fully while your body receives treatment.

Acupuncture treatment guidelines during IVF

IVF is not a single event, but a series of carefully timed phases. Acupuncture treatment is adjusted to align with each stage of the process.

01

Egg retrieval preparation

Suppression phase

  • Acupuncture once weekly
  • Focus on supporting egg quality and overall ovarian health
  • Chinese herbs are not prescribed while on IVF medications

Stimulation phase

  • Acupuncture one to two times per week
  • Electro-stimulation may be used when appropriate
  • Focus on follicular development and ovarian blood flow

02

Wash-out cycle (resting phase)

  • Acupuncture once weekly
  • Electro-stimulation may be used depending on timing of transfer
  • Chinese herbs may be prescribed
  • Focus on stress regulation, hormonal balance, and uterine blood flow

This phase allows the body to reset before transfer and is often an important window for regulation and recovery.

03

Frozen embryo transfer (FET): uterine lining development

Pre-transfer phase

  • Acupuncture and/or electro-stimulation twice weekly
  • Four weeks prior to transfer (total of eight sessions)
  • Focus on uterine lining development, circulation, and stress regulation

This phase is particularly important for patients with known uterine lining concerns or impaired uterine blood flow.

04

Post-transfer: implantation support

  • One acupuncture session 4–5 days after embryo transfer
  • Gentle, minimal treatment
  • No electro-stimulation
  • Focus on implantation support and uterine stability rather than blood flow

How acupuncture is used during IUI cycles

While IVF involves more intensive protocols, acupuncture for IUI is also commonly integrated into treatment. Care during IUI cycles is typically timed around ovulation and insemination, with sessions focused on supporting ovulatory response, uterine blood flow, and overall cycle regulation.

Treatment plans are individualized based on cycle timing, medications, and prior response, and may be adjusted from cycle to cycle as needed.

After Conception

Once pregnancy is confirmed, we typically recommend weekly acupuncture during the first trimester. Treatment during this phase focuses on supporting a viable pregnancy and reducing early pregnancy discomfort, with care adjusted carefully as pregnancy progresses.

Supporting Male Factor Fertility

Male factor fertility plays a role in many fertility journeys and is an important part of comprehensive care. Acupuncture for male partners may focus on supporting sperm parameters such as count, motility, morphology, and overall reproductive health. When appropriate, we review semen analysis results and coordinate care alongside medical evaluation. Treatment plans are individualized and may be used on their own or alongside fertility treatment, depending on the couple’s goals and clinical picture.

LGBTQI+ and Inclusive Fertility Care

We regularly support IUI lesbian patients and IUI lesbian couples, as well as LGBTQI+ individuals and families pursuing assisted reproduction. Care is individualized and may include cycle support, uterine lining preparation, ovulation timing, and coordination with donor sperm or fertility clinic protocols.

IVF & IUI Acupuncture FAQs

How does acupuncture support IVF?

Acupuncture is commonly used throughout IVF to support ovarian response, uterine blood flow, hormone signaling, and overall physiological resilience during treatment. Sessions are timed to specific phases of the IVF cycle and adjusted as medications and protocols change.

Yes. Acupuncture is widely used in fertility clinics worldwide and is often integrated as supportive care during IVF. Research has shown associations between acupuncture, improved uterine blood flow, and IVF outcomes, which has led to the development of widely used clinical protocols.

Ideally, acupuncture begins several weeks to months before IVF to support egg quality and overall reproductive health. That said, many patients start closer to stimulation or transfer, and treatment can still be beneficial. Your practitioner will help determine the most appropriate timing based on your plan.

Treatment timing depends on where you are in the IVF process. Acupuncture may be used during suppression, stimulation, wash-out cycles, uterine lining preparation, and after embryo transfer. Techniques and frequency are adjusted carefully at each stage.

E-stim is used selectively and only during certain phases of IVF. It is commonly incorporated before retrieval or during uterine lining development, but not after embryo transfer. All techniques are chosen carefully based on timing and safety.

Do you prescribe Chinese herbs during IVF?

No. We do not prescribe Chinese herbal medicine while patients are actively taking IVF medications. Herbal medicine may be introduced during non-medicated cycles or wash-out phases when appropriate.

Acupuncture is often used before FET to support uterine lining development and circulation, and again after transfer to support implantation and uterine stability. Treatment during this phase is gentle and carefully timed.

Yes. Acupuncture can be used alongside IUI to support ovulation timing, uterine receptivity, and overall cycle regulation. Treatment plans are simpler than IVF but still individualized based on your cycle and goals.

Yes. We work closely with fertility clinics, including CCRM, Conceptions, and CNY, and regularly coordinate care to align acupuncture treatment with your medical protocol.

No. Acupuncture cannot guarantee pregnancy. It is used as supportive care to help optimize conditions for treatment and complement medical care.
