Is your nervous system in trouble? Here’s how to tell—and what to do about it
Do you feel like your body is stuck in overdrive? Perhaps you’re exhausted, but your mind won’t turn off. You lie down at night, and instead of sinking into rest, your brain replays the day on a loop. Your heart races even when you’re just sitting still. You snap at your kids or partner and immediately regret it. You drink coffee to get going and wine to wind down. And underneath it all, there’s a voice inside whispering, “I can’t keep doing this.”
This is what it looks like when your nervous system is dysregulated; and this is your body’s way of saying that it needs a nervous system reset.
If this sounds familiar, you are so not alone.
What Is Nervous System Dysregulation?
Your nervous system is your body’s command center. It controls how you respond to stress, how you sleep, how you digest food, how you focus—and even how connected you feel to others.
But chronic stress (hello, modern life) can overload the system. Instead of flowing between calm and alert states, your body can get stuck in stress mode: always on, always bracing for the next thing. If you also have a history of trauma, this stress response can become habituated to the point that it feels normal. Whatever the cause, this state is not normal, though. We are not meant to live in overdrive.
Our nervous systems are beautifully designed to protect us. The sympathetic branch—often known as the “fight or flight” response—helped our ancestors survive real, immediate threats like predators or danger in the wild. It’s a powerful system meant to activate quickly in response to danger, giving the body a surge of energy to either confront or escape a threat.
But here’s the key: that state was meant to be temporary.
Once the danger passed, the body was designed to return to the parasympathetic state—what we call “rest and digest.” This is the state where healing happens, where we can connect with others, sleep deeply, and feel safe in our own bodies.
In today’s world, the threats we face are rarely life-or-death—but our nervous systems don’t always know the difference. Chronic stressors like work pressure, overstimulation, emotional strain, and even scrolling through the news can keep us stuck in a low-grade sympathetic state. Over time, this can lead to tension, fatigue, anxiety, burnout, and a host of physical symptoms.
The truth is: We’re meant to live primarily in a parasympathetic state—calm, connected, and resilient. From that place, we can respond to life’s challenges without being ruled by them. Your nervous system is deeply connected to your brain’s pathways. When you’re constantly in fight-or-flight mode, your brain strengthens those stress circuits—making it easier to stay stuck in patterns of overwhelm, anxiety, or shutdown.
But the good news is: Your brain is changeable. Thanks to something called neuroplasticity, your brain can create new patterns—ones that support calm, resilience, and ease. (Scroll down to learn more about how we can help)
Common Signs of a Nervous System in Overdrive
🔥 Physical Symptoms of Sympathetic Stress
- Muscle tension & pain – Especially in the neck, shoulders, jaw, or back, due to the body being in a constant state of readiness.
- Headaches or migraines – Triggered by tension and vascular changes.
- Digestive issues – Such as bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or acid reflux. (The sympathetic system slows digestion to prioritize survival.)
- Increased heart rate & blood pressure – The cardiovascular system is on high alert.
- Shallow or rapid breathing – Often without awareness, contributing to feelings of anxiety.
- Fatigue or wired-but-tired feeling – You may feel exhausted but unable to relax or sleep deeply.
- Weakened immune response – Chronic stress suppresses immune function, making it harder to fight off illness or inflammation.
- Hormonal imbalance – Including disruptions in cortisol, insulin, and reproductive hormones.
- Cold hands and feet – Blood flow is redirected to vital organs and muscles, leaving extremities chilly.
🔥 Mental & Emotional Symptoms
- Anxiety & restlessness – A persistent sense of worry, edginess, or unease.
- Irritability or short temper – You may feel like your fuse is shorter than usual.
- Difficulty concentrating or brain fog – The brain prioritizes survival over clear, creative thinking.
- Sleep disturbances – Trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up feeling unrested.
- Emotional numbness or detachment – As a protective mechanism, the body may dull feelings.
🌙 Long-Term Impacts
- Chronic inflammation – Linked to conditions like heart disease, autoimmune issues, and pain syndromes.
- Digestive disorders – Like IBS, ulcers, or leaky gut syndrome.
- Adrenal fatigue or burnout – From overproduction of stress hormones.
- Mood disorders – Including anxiety, depression, or panic disorders.
- Increased risk of chronic illness – The body’s natural repair systems are compromised.

Rewiring Your Brain for Lasting Change
When we work together to regulate your nervous system with acupuncture, mindful tools, and personalized support, you’re not just feeling better in the moment…you’re laying down new neural pathways that teach your body how to feel safe, calm, and steady again. One of the most powerful parts of this work is that you’re not just “managing stress”—you’re actually rewiring your brain. Restoring parasympathetic dominance isn’t just about feeling more relaxed—it’s about giving your body the conditions it needs to heal, regulate, and thrive.
This is how real, lasting healing happens. Not by forcing your way through burnout, but by gently creating new defaults—where rest feels possible, stress doesn’t rule your life, and your body remembers how to exhale.
You don’t have to keep living in stress mode. Your body knows the way back to balance. You just have to give it the space.
Let’s reset–together.
❤️, Maren
Note: Spots are limited to ensure individual attention and deep support. Reserve your spot now, as they are filling fast! Deadline to enroll is April 29th, 2025.
