What Is Nervous System Dysregulation?

Chronic stress overloads this system. Instead of moving fluidly between calm and alert, your body can get stuck in high-alert mode. Trauma history can reinforce the pattern until it feels normal. But living in overdrive isn’t sustainable.
Your nervous system evolved to protect you. The sympathetic branch—“fight or flight”—fires quickly when danger appears, flooding your body with energy to fight or escape. This survival state is powerful, but it’s meant to be temporary.
Once danger passes, your body should return to the parasympathetic state—“rest and digest.” This is where healing occurs, sleep deepens, and safety allows you to connect with others.
Today, the “threats” are rarely life-or-death. Work deadlines, information overload, emotional strain, and constant notifications trick your body into staying in fight-or-flight. Over time, this stress response contributes to fatigue, anxiety, tension, burnout, and health problems.
The truth: your body is meant to spend most of its time in rest and digest—calm, connected, and resilient.
